Breast Implant Illness: Seeking keys to remission

Breast Implant Illness (BII) involves mild to extreme symptoms that can be debilitating and interfere with life activities and productiveness. The presence of the silicone is enough, in susceptible individuals, to set off an over activity of the immune system. This over activity does not just result in 'attack' of the breast implanted material but also autoimmune attack of different tissues in the body.  Researchers have noticed a correlation with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, blood sugar regulation; autoimmune disease that affect the nervous system such as Guillain Barr syndrome, demyelinating polyneuropathy, myasthenia gravis; and others such as psoriasis, thyroid issues and vasculitis.

Why is there a correlation between so many autoimmune disorders and some who have breast implants? The answer might be associated with a person's genetic status. There are multiple genes that play a role in the expression or susceptibility to autoimmune disease. One of those that has been studied as a therapeutic target to treat autoimmunity to aid remission is Interleukin 13 (IL13). People with mutations in IL13 can have a higher incident in autoimmune diseases.

IL13 is an important regulator of the cells involved in the autoimmunity. It down regulates over reactive cells and thus can play a role in remission especially after the implants have been removed.

Peer reviewed studies have determined that IL13 mutations can be supported to work correctly.  Diets that support IL13 function include foods with L-arginine, myrcene and Vitamin D. There are various environmental toxins and dietary contributions that associated with increased risk of developing an autoimmune reaction.

Raw data from 23 and Me or Ancestry can be used to understand your unique genetic make up and what dietary, nutrient and medications support may be helpful.
