Breast Implant Illness
Breast implant illness (BII) is characterized by chronic health effects resulting from implantation of silicone or saline breast implants. Symptoms of breast implant illness vary from person to person, many of the symptoms are due to genetic mutations (MTHFR, HLA-B27, HLA-DR52, and HLA-DR53, etc ), pre-existing autoimmune disease, type of implants, progression of illness, and trauma. Symptoms are related to the chronic foreign body response and inflammation, oxidative stress, biofilm, and toxicity (silicone, heavy metal, chemical, biotoxin).
The health effects can vary from mild to extreme with some cases causing complete disability. Unfortunately, many healthcare providers do not recognize breast implants as being connected to disease, but it is very real and very concerning. As BII is recognized and research emerges, there are treatments that can mitigate symptoms and assist remission.
Integrative medical care has therapies that can achieve this.
Naturopathic treatment goals:
Facilitate/advocate for the removal of implants
Perform laboratory analysis to assess autoimmune and inflammatory status
Reduce the inflammatory/autoimmune response through supplementation, diet and lifestyle changes
Address and balance neurologic effects
Support remission of underlying autoimmune diagnosis
Use genomic analysis to determine and support SNPs/mutations that may be involved
